Artist Statement:
"How to make a painting as good as an empty canvas?" When I heard Robert Motherwell saythis, it was a creative challenge and a way to think about the visual process as a whole. Seeingthe tabula rasa as a metaphor of future potential as opposed to asserting the past - using thehistory of my visual language but searching for new phrases that are outside the context ofarchitectonic space.
It is often said that art is a reaction to the time that we live in. And for this body of work thatemerged in 2021 - the desire to find open spaces, to reconnect to essentials whether it beaesthetic, personal or spiritual motivated the choices to reconfigure the visual architecturalelements of my previous work.
The vision to emerge from the architectural space, to exceed beyond the structure and safety ofthe grid, to live with less and experience more subtlety are the themes of this body of paintings.Defining a moment in a painting, executing a gesture - a visual echo defines a space.
