Curtis William Frank: Foundations opening reception

January 11 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Court Tree Collective is proud to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Queens-based painter Curtis William Frank. This exhibition titled Foundations is a concept that bridges the distance between history and the present, by presenting three artistic classics the amphora, the pedestal and the skull.

Opening Reception: Jan 11th, 5 – 7pm

Industry City: 51 35th Street, Building #5, 2nd floor

Jan 11th – Feb 2nd 2020

ARTIST STATEMENT: In this body of work I have made new objects to speak about old concepts, thereby bridging the distance between history (where we have come from) and the present (where we are).  A pedestal is for resting upon, in this case the gaze of the viewer.  An amphora is for holding things, in this case our attention.  A skull is like the period at the end of a sentence.

These three ideas are iterated across media.  Lines of canvas string become a pedestal which changes with ambient light and the perspective of the viewer;  it also arises from the material upon which it rests and so has a narrative akin to our own birth from the earth as dust to which we shall return.  Similarly, amphorae made from this same earth are representations of objects which thousands of years ago would have been necessary to transport water or store grain.  Thus our history is collapsed into a single object:  how we moved from nomadic to agrarian societies, developed culture, and thereafter produced objects of art to reflect on this journey.  And of course, at the end of every individual journey, the final punctuation of the grave.
